I am not planning on doing a full deck of tarot cards but I came up with this idea for the queen of cups and I needed to draw it to get it out of my head. I wanted to use imagery/symbolism that draws from a more scottish background.

She is wearing a seal skin (as in, a selkie), and stands on a rock amongst a river/waterfall that also forms her cloak.

She holds a quaich (ritual cup) in her left hand, filled by the moon to overflowing. Her right hand is encircled in healing water.

Her crown is made up of nine seashells, foremostly a hermit crab shell. Her hair is green like seaweed.

I plan on keeping this a sketch for now because I have other projects I need to work on but, man, it is tempting to try to mimic some of the gorgeous tarot art out there.

...

The suit of cups is about the heart and so this card is about emotional mastery as well as compassion and intuition. Reversed it is about co-dependency and lack of self-care.

I like the idea of the river - a strong power but mostly tranquil on the surface. We can receive power from our emotions if we learn to harness that energy rather than getting sucked under by them.

The overflowing cup is about receiving strength from the divine and giving from the overflow.

I think one of the lessons of the selkie folklore is not letting a S.O. take your power/inner-self away from you. And that is what the reversed card also cautions, I believe. So upright, where she does have her skin, is an embracing of her inner intuition and emotions and self.

Anyway, as you can see I have many thoughts about this card and this little sketch. <3
