This post was a direct result of some of @iridescentfeline‘s questions about my last post. (by the way thank you so much for your interest in her!) This character’s name is Aileir Diamond Dragon… for now.
Current canon is that she has complete control over her changes. So, if she wants to grow just claws she can. If she wants to form a band of scales on her arm… she can. The caveat is that any transformations have to look like the equivalent anatomy of her dragon form (same color and type of scale etc.)
In that vein, if she wanted, she could transform into her dragon form in the gory werewolf style - bone by bone and scale by scale. But also has the option of a fast change from one form to the other. (I hope that answers your question?)
Also when her slit eyes dilate she has legit anime eyes. lol

As far as intuitive vs learned. I’m thinking that the quick transition is more of a biological reflex like mirroring and that the partial changes are more learned.
But the implications of a baby just automatically switching between forms... pretty sure that could have some disastrous fall out. >.>
Or maybe it’s just one of those things caretakers get used to. haha
